What Our Followers Want in a Tattoo

At NeckBoneInk in Malvern, PA, we’re all about creating tattoos that feel personal, purposeful, and one-of-a-kind. We know no two clients — or tattoos — are the same. That’s why we turned to our Instagram community to get a better sense of what people are into right now. From the meaning behind matching tattoos to design preferences and color choices, here’s what you told us — and how it all plays into designing something that truly reflects you.

1. Matching Tattoos: It’s About Connection

We asked: How do you feel about matching tattoos?

67% said they love them, while 33% said they’re not really their style.
Matching tattoos aren’t just for couples anymore — they’re for best friends, siblings, and even solo tributes that “match” with a memory or milestone. Whether it’s identical ink or two pieces that complement each other, matching tattoos are all about connection. At Neckbone, we truly enjoy working on pieces with that kind of depth and significance.  If you're considering one, think about what story you want it to tell — that’s where the magic is.

2. Simple vs. Detailed: Which Side Are You On?

We asked: Do you prefer simple or detailed tattoos?

62% said detailed, and 38% went for simple.

Minimalist tattoos are all about clean lines and subtle symbolism — they’re timeless, sleek, and often small-scale. But most of our poll respondents are drawn to detail — we’re talking fine lines, shading, texture, and layered designs that really make a statement. Both styles require skill and intention, and the choice really comes down to your vision, placement, and how much you want your tattoo to express visually.

3. Black & Gray vs. Color: The Classic Debat

We asked: Black and gray or color tattoos?

80% said black & gray, and 20% picked color.
Black and gray continues to dominate, and for good reason. It’s clean, versatile, and ages well — especially great for realism, portraiture, or fine line work. But don’t count color out. A bold, vibrant piece in full color can say a lot and add an entirely different energy to a tattoo. Color tattoos thrive in styles like traditional, neo-traditional, or illustrative, and when done right, they’re awesome.
